Translation

In my time, when I was going to school, if the teacher found out that we spoke one word of Irish from the time we left school in the afternoon until we returned the next day we would be struck so many times with the cane. And after that came the time that he started teaching us Irish and Christian Doctrine. And he began... This now is the Christian Doctrine:

What is Christian Doctrine? It is a clear and comprehensible explanation of the Catholic religion, of the commandments and of other things that are necessary so that we might be saved.

Must we hold the Christian Doctrine in high regard? We must, because it is the same doctrine that Christ and the apostles taught.

How should we learn the Christain Doctrine? We should listen to it attentively, honestly and graciously as well as if our Lord Jesus Christ were talking to us.

How should we begin and end the Christian Doctrine and other pious works? We should bless ourselves, that is, make the sign of the cross.

What is the meaning of making the sign of the cross? It is the sign of Christ's loyal disciples who are ready and prepared to hear(?) his Christian Doctrine and to carry his cross.

What is God? The first thing every Christian ought to believe is that there is one God. This is the first article of the Creed.

Who is God? The creator of heaven and earth and the almighty Lord over everything.

Did God always exist? Yes. And before all time, because he is without beginning without end.
