Ó Gealbháin, Aindréas

Biographical Note

Ó Gealbháin, Aindréas (Aindréus) (c.1857-?): He was born in Derreennagreer, near Sneem, in the parish of Kilcrohane, county Kerry, about 1857. He lived there till age twelve, and then moved to Kenmare parish. He also lived in the parish of Templenoe as an adult. According to a story he told Tadhg Ó Murchadha in the National Folklore Collection (vol. 402, 'Tigh Púcaí i gCúm Luiminne' (9/7/1937), 26-57), Aindréas was 'i n-aimsir ag Sasnach (Risteárd Duderson)' (‘in service to an Englishman (Richard Duderson)’) in Coomlumminy in Templenoe parish about fifty years earlier (c.1887). He never received any formal education. His father was a farmer, as was he. He was living in a house with his married son and daughter-in-law when Tadhg Ó Murchadha visited him (9/7/1937). Ó Murchadha described him as 'ard mílítheach, crom bhéal liath air' (‘tall and pale, with a grey moustache’). Aindréas’s wife was dead at this point. According to Tadhg Ó Murchadha Aindréas used to sing at feis competitions, and always won first prize. He seems to have been visited by Tadhg Ó Murchadha for the last time on 15 July 1937. He was about 86 at that time, living on his own and in charge of the house and farm. He supplied Tadhg Ó Murchadha with folkloric material which is available in National Folklore Collection, UCD. Ó Murchadha’s diary accounts of him are in National Folklore Collection vol. 425, 9/7/1937; 15/7/1937. Reference to the Doegen recordings are in the diary account for 9 July 1937.
