Biographical Note

Carún (Carey), Seán (John) (c.1858-?): He was born in Luogh, Doolin, county Clare, around 1858, and attended school in St Bridget’s Well, Liscannor, county Clare, fairly regularly for about seven years. His father was a farmer and fisherman and he became a farmer himself. He was living in Luogh with his family during the censuses of 1901 [http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000471323/] and 1911 [http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001770646/]. He and his wife, Catherine, whom he married around 1899, had four children before 1911; only three survived. Published material from him includes: Seán Ó Carúin, 'Dhá sgéilín ó Thuadh-Mhumhain', Béaloideas (June, 1930). Further folkloric material collected from him is housed in the National Folklore Collection, UCD.
