Translation

Donald MacKenna was at the fair one day and he met a woman and she asked him... she asked him if he would pull a bagful of meal for her. And he said he would be happy to do so. And she said... He said to her, "Did you pay for it?"

"I paid for it!" she said.

"Well, I... my horse won't pull a pound of it if it's been paid for. He never... he never pulled a pound of meal except meal... except meal that wasn't paid for."

Commentary

The material in the Doegen collection from Eilis Ní Chleircín contains several short anecdotes of the kind above, which appear to be told for the sake of humour or amusement, and do not seem to have any deeper folkloric significance.

This item is transcribed also in Heinrich Wagner and Colm Ó Baoill, Linguistic atlas and survey of Irish dialects (4 vols, Dublin, 1958-69), vol. 4, 286.
