Translation

There once was an old woman and she went to a céilí dance in County Tyrone. And there were two boys in the house she went into. And she was barelegged and there were warts on her feet. There were two boys in the house and one boy said to the other, "Get the axe, Patrick, so that we can cut the little potatoes off her feet."

Commentary

This is one of several stories in the Doegen collection recorded from the repertoire of Eilis Ní Chleircín that appear to be told solely for humour or amusement, but do not appear to be of any further folkloric significance.

This item is transcribed also in Heinrich Wagner and Colm Ó Baoill, Linguistic atlas and survey of Irish dialects (4 vols, Dublin, 1958-69), vol. 4, 286, and in Róise Ní Bhaoill, Ulster Gaelic voices: bailiúchán Doegen 1931 (Belfast, 2010), 344-5.
